Cap de Formentor
The meeting point of the winds.
Cap de Formentor is the wild northern finger of Mallorca, where the Tramuntana mountains run out into the sea as a spine of pale limestone cliffs. Islanders call it the meeting point of the winds, and the serpentine road out to its lighthouse is one of the Mediterranean's great drives.
The classic view is from the Mirador es Colomer, a railed platform perched high above a sheer-sided islet, with the coast falling away in layers of grey rock and blue water. Further on, the Formentor lighthouse marks the very tip, 210 metres above the waves.
In high summer the narrow road is closed to private cars during the day and served by shuttle buses, so check current access before you go — or come out of season, when the cape is at its quietest and most spectacular.
Getting there
The cape begins about 20 minutes by car from Port de Pollença, at the north of Mallorca. In peak months the road to the lighthouse is restricted to a shuttle bus, which runs from Port de Pollença and nearby car parks. The main viewpoints sit directly beside the road.
